The Korean Demilitarized Zone—DMZ is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula; it was established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It is 250 kilometers long, approximately 4 km wide and, despite its name, is the most heavily militarized border in the world. The Northern Limit Line, or NLL, is the de facto maritime boundary between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea and the coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily militarized.

 

Because no one has been allowed entered this place for 61 years, you can see the variety of species that are endangered. Having no human being enter the area for such a long time has made this place full of wildlife. I thought this site – the DMZ area – is paratext/ marginal place of Korea. It is in Korea, but it cannot be said any part of North or South Korea. But what is going on in this place still affects on these two. In this project, I interpret the idea of paratext to a site concept. DMZ is the marginal area of those two countries. What is happening in this non-framed area can influence on the main areas in various ways: politically, culturally, and socially.
